The United Kingdom’s Ordnance Survey claims it has created the world’s most accurate 3D map. The map, of seaside town of Bournemouth, was created over 3 years by laser-toting vans and aircraft bouncing beams off the local topology. By combining the 700 million-odd laser beams with 2D maps and aerial photography, Ordnance Survey says the accuracy of the 3D maps are a substantial improvement upon Google Earth and Microsoft Virtual Earth. Unfortunately for the rest of the UK, the 3D mapping technology won’t be extended in its use for about 5 years; about as long as the Ordnance Survey believes is required to perfect it.
