UK’s Ordnance Survey claims world’s most accurate 3D map

The United Kingdom’s Ordnance Survey claims it has created the world’s most accurate 3D map. The map, of seaside town of Bournemouth, was created over 3 years by laser-toting vans and aircraft bouncing beams off the local topology. By combining the 700 million-odd laser beams with 2D maps and aerial photography, Ordnance Survey says the accuracy of the 3D maps are a substantial improvement upon Google Earth and Microsoft Virtual Earth. Unfortunately for the rest of the UK, the 3D mapping technology won’t be extended in its use for about 5 years; about as long as the Ordnance Survey believes is required to perfect it.
