German consumer electronics manufacturer Medion has announced the GoPal P4635, the company’s first internet-connected portable navigation device. Headed for Europe, the 4.3-inch GPS navigator features all the accoutrements of the new connected PNDs from TomTom, Garmin and Navigon, including: NAVTEQ-powered traffic updates, fuel prices, parking spot availability, and weather updates (fuel and parking info is only available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, currently). Strangely, the GoPal P4635 doesn’t include local search capabilities right now, but the company says it is in talks with a major company in order to provide the service in the near future.
The Medion P4635 also includes NAVTEQ maps of 43 European countries, an interchangeable SIM card with GSM/GPRS cellular support provided by Dutch operator KPN, voice-guided turn-by-turn directions with spoken street names, and Medion’s GoPal Navigator AE version 5 browser. Unfortunately there isn’t Bluetooth support.
Costing 349 euros (US$500) when it ships this month, the Medion P4635 will also require a 4.95 euro monthly subscription (or 50 euros annually) for live traffic services.
